Northeast Portland (99 Churches MAP)
Dan Mayhew, 503-287-6905, reports:
 |
The Urban Portland Pastor's prayer gathering has been meeting at Central
Church of Christ, 5231 SE Stark from 7 AM to 9 AM with many of the pastors
going to a coffee shop afterwards for fellowship. The group has been
meeting since the first prayer summit in 1990, although several have been
praying together since 1985. The group usually changes their meeting
location once a year after the prayer summit, but this year they opted to
remain at Central. There are regularly about 10 - 15 in
attendance. The group is a mix of traditional church pastors as well
as ministers in para-church and house church ministry. |
 |
A group of pastors and leaders from the Northeast part of town have been
meeting for nearly three years. They rotate among various churches
every month, including St. Matthews Episcopal, Faith Lutheran, and Central
Evangelical. The group is presently meeting at Central Evangelical
located at 4927 NE 55th Ave. The group has been exploring ways to
enter in join ministry and are making plans to co-sponsor vacation bible
schools this summer and participate in a multi-congregation celebration
gatherings. |

HOME CHURCHES There is an expanding network of home-based churches
in the Portland area. These groups are relational in nature and do not
come under any particular denominational umbrella. Presently, there
are churches of this type in Northeast Portland, Southeast Portland,
Gresham, Vancouver, inner Southeast Portland, Forest Grove, and
elsewhere. These are not church-based cell groups or bible studies,
but functionally autonomous, voluntarily interdependent small group
congregations many of which are relating through SURGE (Small, Unique,
Reproducible, Group Enterprises) a loosely structured forum which is based
at Western Seminary. There are developing networks of such churches
across the country, with hubs of home church activity in Denver, Colorado
Springs (CO) Brandon, (FL), Salem (MA), Long Beach, Riverside (CA), Austin,
Kileen (TX), Tuscon, Phoenix (AZ), Portal (GA), and the Puget Sound area to
name a few. These networks are beginning to develop communication webs
among them and indicate a rapidly developing movement. DAWN Ministries
of Colorado Springs is lending coordinating and logistical support to the
nationwide network. |
